Cinco de Mayo, which translates to “Fifth of May” in Spanish, is a holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. Despite being outnumbered, the Mexican army successfully defended their territory against the invading French army, which was considered one of the most powerful in the world at the time.
In Mexico, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo is largely honored in the state of Puebla, where the historic battle took place. However, the holiday has become increasingly popular in the United States as a celebration of Mexican culture.
People celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a variety of ways. Many cities in the United States, particularly those with large Hispanic populations, hold parades featuring marching bands, dancers, and colorful floats. Celebrations also include concerts and festivals. Osiel Alvarado states, “I’m ready to eat all of the food.” Traditional Mexican foods, such as tacos, enchiladas, and guacamole, are often served, along with margaritas and other festive drinks. Decorations, such as pinatas, Mexican flags, and colorful banners, are also common. Some people also use Cinco de Mayo as an opportunity to learn more about Mexican history, attending lectures, museum exhibits, or other cultural events.
Although there is no specific dress code for Cinco de Mayo, many people choose to wear traditional Mexican clothing or colors to celebrate the holiday. Women may wear colorful embroidered dresses, called “huipiles,” or skirts, called “faldas,” and men may wear traditional Mexican shirts, called “guayaberas.” The colors of the Mexican flag, red, white, and green, are also commonly worn or incorporated into clothing or accessories.
