Girls' wrestling NCC tourney 2024

The Algona girls' wrestling team recently competed in the North Central Conference (NCC) tournament held in Clear Lake on January 19th. Algona placed first as a team with a score of 193, followed by Humboldt with 153, then Clear Lake with 150, and finally, Iowa Falls, with 58.

Many of the AHS girls secured first place in their weight class, such as Harley Tobin (100), Reese Taylor (105), Alissa Engel (115), Malyn Davis (120), Lillian Allie (125), Sienna Fehr (135), Reagan Haynes (170), and Gretchen Gorham (190). Sophomore, Reese Taylor, says, “Wrestling teaches discipline, and everyone wants each other to succeed."

The girls have had a great season, with this year’s highlights including: going 6-4 in duals this year, including beating Humboldt 48-36. All of the girls placed in the top 10 in all tournaments this year, winning four tournaments as a team, such as the NCC tournament. They placed 9th at the Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament, a large tournament with 42 teams, including teams from out of state. One last highlight is placing 7th out of 33 teams at the Centra Iowa kickoff tournament.

This success will hopefully follow the girls into Varsity Regionals. The Varsity Regionals will be held on Friday, January 26, at 10:00 am, in Sioux City. The girls who place in the top four at Regionals will advance to the State Tournament, which will be held on February 1st and 2nd.
