Girls' basketball 2024

The Algona High School girls’ basketball team made an impact on the court with their amazing skills, teamwork, and determination. The girls’ basketball team finished their season 13-1 in the Conference and 19-5 overall. 

On Saturday, February 10, Algona hosted the first round of postseason play in the AHS gym and had an exciting match against Eagle Grove. The final score was 74-31, with Algona holding the winning title. Junior, Casey VanOtterloo, led the team with 24 points. Lauren McLaughlin scored a total of 14 points, followed by freshman, Hayden Kuhlmann, with 13 points. 

Last week, on Wednesday, February 14, the Algona Bulldogs hosted Regionals round two against Garner Hayfield Ventura. It was a tough competition between the Dogs and Cardinals. Algona won, with the final score being 70-63 in overtime. Freshman, Hayden Kuhlmann, led the team with 22 points. Junior, Paige Schmitt, followed with 14 points along with freshman, Hayden McLaughlin, with 13 points.

The Algona Bulldogs made their way on the court for the Regional Finals with Des Moines Christian on Saturday, February 17. The Bulldogs and Lions both worked very hard, making it a tough competition for each other. The Lions held the winning title at the end of the night with the final score being 45-41. Sophomore, Addy Oetker, led her team with a total of 16 points.

Coach McLaughlin shows his appreciation in regards to the team’s performance, “This season was full of excitement. Our team won the North Central Conference Championship with a 13-1 Conference record. We also made it to the Regional Final game for the second year in a row. We finished with a 19-5 overall record. Our team showed a lot of toughness throughout the season.” 

With their impressive skills and determination, the Algona High School girls’ basketball team has a bright future ahead. They are a shining example of what can be accomplished through teamwork, skill, and dedication. Their success on the court is the result of their hard work and support from their community.
