Leaving Iowa 2025

Written by Ezra Oldenkamp

In the PAC, Algona High School students will be participating in the spring play named Leaving Iowa. Whether they’re acting on stage or working with the stage crew, every student has a role that they play, which plays a vital role in the play’s success.

The play will happen on May 3rd at 7:00pm and May 4th at 2:00pm. To enter, you have to pay five dollars for students and eight dollars for adults.

Leaving Iowa is a family-friendly comedy that is fun for the whole family. The character is from parents who are from the “greatest generation.” The story centers around the character of Don Browning, a middle aged writer who comes home to finally take his dad’s ashes to his childhood home. While there, he realizes his grandma’s house was taken down just for a grocery store to be put in its place. This causes him to travel across Iowa to find a proper resting place. As he is driving through familiar places, the story shifts between present day to his memories. The memories are about the vacations they always took. Through the memories and the trip itself, Don finds the perfect final destination.

The main roles of the play are Elijah Garrett playing Don Browning, Flynn McCann is playing the younger Don Browning, Karlee Kahler is playing the sister, Ryley Riggert is playing the dad, and Hannah Severson is playing the mom. Stage crew member, Cadyn Samp, says, “Stage crew is genuinely so fun!”

Have fun and break a leg Algona students.
