At Algona High School, there are many different opportunities to learn. One of those opportunities is through internships.
Mr. Connick is a teacher at AHS who teaches WWll, western civilization, and a school to work class. In his school to work class, Mr. Connick takes his students to different workplaces and has students ask questions about their businesses, workplace environments, and different wages that they offer.
Starting in the first term of class, students focus on employability skills that include, among other things: career research, resumes writing, cover letters, budgeting, and mock interviews. The second term they focus more on students being matched up in their business of interest around Algona. They spend most of their second term working as an intern at that business.
This term, many students are in a variety of careers including: construction, Snap-On, nursing, teaching, law, chiropractor, and AMU. Students in the class get real life experiences of what's to come in the future to help them build a better understanding of the career of their choice.
Reese Rahe, a participant in the class, says, “It’s the most useful class you can take in high school.” Rahe is an intern at Meyer Home Improvement and enjoys it very much.
