After graduation from college, Sara Curtis subbed for a year in Mason City and then started teaching 2nd grade the next year. After eight years, Curtis and her husband moved to Algona and in 2009 she started part-time with 3-year-old preschool. Originally she swore she would not go below 2nd grade, but now, she thinks “that level is the best!” She also coached 10 years of middle school cross country, where she loved working with a different age of student.
In retirement, Mrs. Curtis will miss the children the most, specifically the random comments, “I love you’s,” and hugs from current and past students.
Curtis describes the most satisfying part about being a teacher as seeing the “click” and growth in children.
After her many years of experience, Mrs. Curtis has learned that teachers and associates are caring individuals who want what is best for kids. Education in general swings through philosophies and methods, always changing, and trying to do what is right. Kids need high expectations, they need to be challenged, but they also just need to be loved and know someone cares about them. “And they always have the chance to just be a kid,” Curtis states.
In retirement, Curtis plans to do a bit of subbing, spend time with family, ride bike & run, volunteer, and organize items from moving to Mason City.
Mrs. Curtis says, “I have loved my time in the Algona Community School District and all of the people that I have had the privilege to teach and coach, as well as the families of the students.”
Congratulations Mrs. Curtis on 16 years of service to the Algona Community School District!
