The Algona Community School District recently finished construction on the district's new fieldhouse. The project started in the summer of 2024 and was finished in the fall of 2025. However, part of the facility was opened for use in the summer.
The new addition provides much needed space for sports teams of all levels and upgrades to existing facilities. The new fieldhouse has four wood courts, two additional courts, a 200 meter track, a state of the art weightroom, and a new wrestling room that is double the size of the old one. There were also upgrades within the original building that took place. The old weightroom was turned into a new, large classroom, and the smaller wrestling room was turned into a middle school STEM room.
The fieldhouse project totaled around 13.1 million dollars. The school funded this by using Sales Tax Dollars, SAVE tax. The state of Iowa has a one cent sales tax that is disbursed to school districts on a per pupil basis, that is what was used to fund the fieldhouse.
Superintendent Joe Carter said, “Overall, the fieldhouse provides experiences and opportunities for students in the Algona Community School District that they did not previously have.”
