The Algona girls’ wrestling team finished their regular season in a winning fashion and moved through postseason play. They are ready for State!
The girls dominated the North Central Conference tournament with a final team score of 269, placing 1st! The top finishers for the Bulldogs were Mara Davis in 1st place, Eden Geddings 2nd place, Reece Taylor 1st place, Laura Stohr 2nd, Kayle Vincent Gomez 2nd place, Ruby Roof 1st place, Alissa Engel 1st place, Sienna Fehr 2nd place, Lillian Allie 4th place, Emmy Owen 1st place, Regan Jensen 1st place, Lydia Hersom 5th place, Reagan Haynes 2nd place, and Karsyn Myhre 2nd place.
The girls went to Regionals in Nevada to compete for a chance to extend their season at State on Friday, January 30. Only the top two in each weight class advance to State from this competition. Six AHS girls will advance and compete at State. Mara Davis placed first with a pin in the semi finals and finals. Laura Stohr placed first with a pin in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Ruby Roof placed first with pins in the semifinals and finals after a first round bye. Sienna Fehr placed second with a pin in the quarter finals and a technical fall in the semifinals. However, she came up short in the finals but still placed 2nd. Regan Jensen placed first with a pin in the quarter finals and semifinals and a major decision in the finals. Reagan Haynes placed first with a pin in the semifinals and finals. Placing third and falling just short in her wrestle back, Reese Taylor states, “I wouldn't change these last four years for the world.”
These six will compete at State, in Coralville, on Thursday, February 5th, and Friday, the 6th. Going into the State tournament, Davis was ranked third at 100 pounds with a record of 34-5. She will face off in the first round against Brooke Walrath from LIMA with a record of 30-14. Stohr was ranked 12 at 115 pounds with a 28-8 record. She will face off in the first round against Cora Schut from SXCN with a record of 29-3. Roof was ranked first at 125 pounds with a 42-1 record. She will face off in the first round against Caroline Pohlman from Lima with a record of 38-14. Fehr was ranked 12 at 135 pounds with a 30-11 record. She will face off in the first round against Bethann Templeman from RRNW with a record of 43-13. Jensen was ranked second at 155 pounds with a 42-2 record. She will face off in the first round against Jolyssa Rodes Perez from SCW with a record of 12-7. Haynes was ranked second at 190 pounds with a 39-4 record. She will face off in the first round against Serenity Malone from CRW with a record of 22-10.
