Speech is a speaking competition where students get the opportunity to improve their talents and be more comfortable speaking in front of others.
There are two different areas of speech to compete in. Large group is when you speak in a group. Individual speech is when you speak on your own. In each section of speech are a large number of different categories to compete in, including improvisation, choral speaking, musical theatre, one act, mime, radio broadcast, and much more!
Korbin Awe says, “Speech is a great opportunity for many students to step outside of their comfort zone to do many things that you were slightly comfortable in that you also get judged on to see how well you're improving.”
At AHS, the speech team is directed by Moni Westling. The students had their first large group competition in Manson on January 24th.
AHS student Braylon Whitacre was in the short film category with a film named “The Data.” He received a Division One rating.
AHS members of the musical theater act are Korbin Awe, Hannah Dose, Elijah Garrett, Finn Garrett, Karlee Kahler, Grace Luitjens, and McKenna Van Reese. They received a Division One rating as well.
Abby Smith and Nick DePue received a Division One rating in radio broadcasting.
Abby Smith, Nick DePue, and Aiden Peterson received a Division One rating in Ensemble Acting.
The group improv also received a Division One rating. Members of that are Korbin Awe, Noah Wolf, and Braxton Whitarce.
Next up for speech, the people who received a Division One rating will move on to State speech on February 7th in Cherokee!
