The end of the school year is near, and many students, like Kaden Bormann, are ready to be done for the year. He said, “I had an amazing year, but I can't wait for it to be over.”
There have been a lot of events going on recently.
In advisory, senior advisory parties were on Friday, May 8th. Advisories did a fun activity as a group as well as ate some snacks. Mrs. Spear’s advisory went for a walk around the school, Mr. Kahler’s advisory played kickball, and Mr. Elsbecker’s advisory ran off energy on the football field.
On Tuesday, May 12th, was the video yearbook. This was a great recap of the 2025-2026 school year put together by the AHS Broadcasting department. Leaders of the video this year were Jordan Jansen and Aylee Herke with video clips from all of the broadcasting students.
The last day for the class of 2026 was Wednesday, May 13th. They came back on Thursday, May 14th, for a breakfast from the teachers, senior awards in the PAC, and the Walk Through the Ages. The senior awards ceremony started at 8:30 a.m. and they handed out many different scholarships. The Algona Community School Foundation awards over one million dollars in scholarships every year! That is only a portion of the scholarships given out between the awards ceremony and the graduation ceremony. In addition to the Foundation scholarships, scholarships from local people, businesses, and colleges also announced their recipients. The Walk Through the Ages took place after that, where upcoming graduates walked through all of the Algona Community School District buildings in their caps and gowns, high fiving younger students along their way.
Commencement for seniors will be on Sunday, May 17th, at 2:00 p.m. Seniors will receive their diplomas, the band and choir will perform, Tate Carter, senior class president, will give a speech as will school board member Dr. Owen, and more scholarships will be announced. This year’s class flower is the yellow rose and their motto is: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts,” by Winston Churchill.
The official last day of school is Wednesday, May 20th. Students will get dismissed at 11:30 a.m. High school students' last day is Tuesday, May 19th, if they have all of their missing work complete.
As the year comes to an end, there are still many opportunities to learn. Make the most of the three school days left!
