The Bulldog boys’ golf team had a strong stretch of competition during the first week of May, competing in multiple meets and tournaments against tough competition from around the area. Throughout the week, the Bulldogs continued to show consistency and improvement on the course.
On May 2, the Bulldogs competed in an NCC triangular with Clarion and Humboldt at the Clarmond Country Club. The Bulldogs finished second with a team score of 154, tying Humboldt but losing on the fifth score tiebreaker. Nathan Manske was the leading scorer for Algona with a 36, placing second overall.
The next day, the Bulldogs competed at the Tornado Boys Tournament at the Buena Vista Golf Course at Lake Creek Country Club. Facing a large field of teams, Algona placed fifth overall with a score of 311. Teague Alesch and Nathan Manske both led the Bulldogs with rounds of 78. Teague Alesch said, “The most important shot is the next one.”
The team bounced back on May 5 at the NCC triangular held at Eagle Hills Golf Course. The Bulldogs earned a first place finish with a team score of 150. Strong performances throughout the lineup helped secure the Conference victory on their home course. Wyatt Kelly led Algona with a 36, earning medalist honors.
Later that week, the Bulldogs traveled to Legacy Golf Course for an NCC meet on May 7. Competing against several Conference teams, Algona finished third overall with a team score of 314. The leading scorer for Algona was Alex Brooks with a 76, placing fourth overall.
The busy week continued on May 8 at Spring Valley Golf Course in a triangular against Estherville Lincoln Central and Emmetsburg. The Bulldogs finished in first place with a team score of 301, closing out the week on a high note. Nathan Manske led Algona with a 70, shooting two under par and placing first overall.
The Bulldogs competed at Sectionals on May 13 at Emerald Hills Golf Club in Okoboji. The team finished fourth overall and did not qualify for Districts. Despite the team result, Brooks Kuhlmann advanced individually after shooting an 81.
Kuhlmann will compete at Districts on May 18 at Landsmeer Golf Club. If he finishes in the top two individually once again, he will earn a spot at State.
