Terms three and four, Mr. Brian Connick held a class where students got the chance to have an internship in a work field they would be interested in going into. Students met with Connick once a week in the prior term to learn valuable skills such as communication and how to be properly dressed. Students also discussed what they wanted their future plans to look like and what they wanted out of the internship. At the end of term two, students were placed in an internship that was within their wants.
One of the most popular places to intern at was at the hospital, with students shadowing the healthcare employees in different positions. A couple students also had internships within the school. Some examples of those were helping with the special education students at varying Algona school buildings and helping with the technology department within the high school. Senior Jordan Jansen had an internship at a law firm. She said that “this was one of the most valuable experiences within my high school career and helped solidify my decision to pursue law.”
It is now the end of the year, meaning these internships are wrapping up. This is an excellent program for students, and we hope to continue to see great success with it in the future.
