Mike Elsbecker 2026

Written by Taylor Coleman

After many hard working years in education, Mike Elsbecker is retiring and closing an important chapter of his life. Throughout the years, Mr. Elsbecker has created a positive impact on students and staff.

Elsbecker was offered his first teaching position in the 1996/1997 school year. Elsbecker taught 7th grade English Language Arts and 8th grade social studies and math in Fenton. He then came to Algona and taught for 12 years. In addition to those initial classes, he also taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science, middle school American History, government, health, study skills, self-contained 4th and 5th grade, and guided reading throughout his teaching years.

In addition to teaching, Elsbecker has coached numerous activities throughout the years. Elsbecker was a Varsity baseball coach for 19 years, 10 years as a Varsity assistant football coach, a couple years as a middle school basketball coach, and one year as a middle school track coach.

Mike Elsbecker says “that the most satisfying part of teaching is seeing young people accomplish what they didn’t think was possible.” He also really enjoys talking to former students who have moved on with their lives. One aspect of teaching that Elsbecker will miss most is the schedule, he claims that it is a very easy schedule when you are raising a family.

Throughout the years, he has learned a lot about students, teachers, and school in general. He has learned that children want to succeed, be recognized, and be resilient. Elsbecker believes that the students will work hard when motivated and pushed in the right direction. He also believes that to be a teacher requires patience and dedication.

Mike Elsbecker feels a huge sense of accomplishment in his teaching career; 30 years is a long time and is approximately 25 years longer than he thought he would last when he first started. Two amazing colleagues he points out are his two brothers, Tom and Matt. They all grew up together and have always had high expectations for each other.

Elsbecker is ready for retirement and is excited to do different things. He is ready for any challenges that life will throw at him.

After 30 years in education, Mike Elsbecker leaves behind a strong, impactful example that will continue to influence students, athletes, and staff members for years to come.
