After 29 years of teaching at Algona Community School District and more than three decades in education overall, Cari Connick is preparing to begin a well-earned retirement filled with relaxation, travel, and time with friends and family.
Her teaching career began in 1989 in a small town in Nebraska, where she first discovered her passion for helping students learn and grow. Throughout her career, she taught a variety of grade levels and subjects, including first grade reading, fifth and sixth grade, special education for grades 1 through 4, and high school special education. Her willingness to adapt and meet the needs of students at every level made her an important part of the school community for many years.
Throughout all of the many teaching assignments, Mrs. Connick has created a warm and inviting environment for all students. “I have learned that schools are safe havens for many students,” she states. This philosophy has driven her warm and caring classroom.
When reflecting on what she will miss most, she quickly points to the people she worked alongside each day. The relationships she built with fellow teachers and associates became one of the most meaningful parts of her career. Looking back on her career, she feels a strong sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the many mentors, colleagues, and administrators who influenced her throughout the years.
Connick says the most satisfying aspect of teaching has been seeing students persevere through challenges and finally understand concepts they once struggled with. She also appreciated that every day in education brought something new.
As retirement begins, she looks forward to slowing down and enjoying life on her own schedule. Travel is high on the list, along with tackling long looked over “to do” lists.
Her impact on students, coworkers, and the Algona community will not be forgotten. After decades of service, dedication, and care for children, she leaves behind a legacy built on patience, compassion, and commitment to education. Her husband, Brian Connick, says, “My wife has been a great educational role model. She has consistently shown what it is to be an educational professional who is focused on the student.”
Congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for your years of service to students and families at Algona Community School District.
