Algona High School has a new foreign exchange student in the senior class this school year. Her name is Adele Vienne, and she is from Reunion Island. It is a small island near Madagascar.
Vienne wanted to be an exchange student because a member of her family had been one previously. She wanted to learn how to speak fluent English because someday she wants to have an international job.
The process for becoming an exchange student started with filling out an application. From there she got connected with the Penning family, whom she is staying with.
There are quite a few differences in schooling from her hometown to Algona. The biggest difference is the time spent in school. At her old school she was there from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm each school day. In her hometown it is very patriotic and the food is very different from America. She said, “My favorite part of America has been the spirit of the high school football games.”
In her free time she loves traveling and going to the beach. When you see her in the hallway at AHS, make sure to say hello.
