The new year is here, and with that comes second semester! This year 3rd quarter started right after Christmas break, on January 5th. In the past, there were around two more weeks of first semester classes in January, but this is not the case this year. Third quarter ends on March 16th and fourth quarter ends on May 25th. Each quarter is worth 40% of your grade, with semester tests being the other 20%. These three grades average to be your final semester grade.

Students look forward to second semester for many reasons. Some things to look forward to this semester include Superstars, Prom, and graduation. Sports this semester are wrestling, basketball, track, and golf. Both wrestling and basketball end in early February, depending on who qualifies for State. Along with many FFA meetings and conventions, National FFA Week takes place from February 22-26. Both track and golf are scheduled to start in early March. Superstars, a yearly class competition, is scheduled to be held on March 18th. State Science Fair takes place on March 25th and 26th. A small “spring break” will be held from March 31st to April 4th. The AHS spring play, to be announced, is on April 10th and 11th. Prom is scheduled for April 17th. Hopefully with Covid these events will be “normal” this year. Although softball and baseball are summer sports, they begin practice on May 3rd. Throughout the semester, there will also be a variety of band and choir concerts and competitions. Softball and baseball are scheduled to start games soon after the school year ends. The seniors’ last day is May 19th, with the Baccalaureate that night. Commencement will be held on May 23rd. Everyone else gets out on May 25th.

With so many events happening, it is obvious why the second semester is such an exciting time for everyone. Ruby Mitchell says, “I am so excited for second semester because I don’t have P.E.” Hopefully we will remain in school for the entirety of the semester. Good luck to everyone in the next semester!
