James Wartick sinks a free throw to add in points for Algona.

The Algona Bulldog girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are on the final stretch of the regular season. Post season play will soon be starting for the Bulldogs. 

The Algona girls’ team hosted Webster City at home on Friday, January 29th. The Bulldogs lost to the Lynx in a close one, 33 to 34. Algona beat Webster City earlier this season 45 to 42. A’Lailah Perry says, “We have made a lot of progress throughout the year, but we are a young team and are still growing.” The sophomore led the Bulldogs in points with 19. Lillian Etherington also had nine points.

On Monday, February 1st, the Algona boys’ team hosted Spencer at home. Algona defeated Spencer 75 to 47. Garrett Goche led the Bulldogs in points with 23. James Wartick added in 18 points as well. 

On Tuesday, February 2nd, the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams traveled to Clarion for some basketball action. The girls lost to a tough Clarion-Goldfield team 26 to 42. Tora Solbach led the team in scoring with seven points. A’Lailah Perry had five points and Alexa Chase had four points. The girls lost to Clarion-Goldfield earlier this season 27 to 44.

The Algona boys’ team defeated Clarion-Goldfield 70 to 63 in an exciting overtime game. Algona also beat Clarion-Goldfield previously in the season 50 to 38. Garrett Goche led Algona in points with 26. Tyler Manske had 12 points also.

Both basketball teams hosted Hampton-Dumont-CAL at home on Friday, February 5th. The girls defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL for the second time this year. This time around, Algona beat Hampton-Dumont-CAL 28-33 and before they won 53 to 26. A’Lailah Perry led in scoring with 12 points. Lillian Etherington scored nine points as well.

The boys’ team beat Hampton-Dumont-CAL 66 to 44. Algona beat Hampton-Dumont-CAL earlier this season 68 to 58. Garrett Goche scored the most points with 16. Kyle Simpson added 12 points. 

The Algona boys’ basketball team hosted Clear Lake at home on Monday, February 8th. Algona lost to Clear Lake 59-70. Noah Nelson led the team in scoring with 21 points. James Wartick added 17 points. 

Both squads traveled to play Saint Edmond on Tuesday, February 9th. Both teams were looking for return wins, as they both beat the Gaels earlier this season. Before the girls won 48 to 32 while the boys won 51 to 43.  This time around, the boys beat Saint Edmond 62-43. Noah Nelson led the team in points with 21. Garrett Goche had 14 points as well. 

The girls also beat Saint Edmond again, this time with a score of 61-29. Lillian Etherington was the team leader with 16 points. Izzy Henry also scored 15 points. 

Tonight, Friday, February 12th, the Algona boys’ team will be traveling to Clear Lake. Then their last regular season game will be on Tuesday, February 16th, at home against Webster City. 

Tomorrow, Saturday, February 13th, the Algona girls’ team will begin postseason play as they travel to play Unity Chistian for Regionals. Good luck to both squads as they near the end of the 2020-2021 season.
