Buy your roses and chocolates now before it’s too late!  Valentine’s Day is on Sunday, February 14.  You may be thinking, “What even is Valentine’s Day?”  Well, sit down and make yourself comfortable because you’re about to find out.

Valentine’s Day began with St. Valentine.  The Catholic church recognizes three men with a name similar to Valentine, Valentinus.  Emperor Claudius II believed that men were better soldiers if they were single.  He then outlawed young men to marry.  Valentine believed this was wrong and continued to marry young men in secret.  Cladius II eventually found out and sentenced him to death.  There are other rumors of St. Valentine, such as that he was killed while trying to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, or that he was imprisoned and sent letters to a young girl he fell in love with.  Nevertheless, St. Valentine seemed to be a hopeless romantic.

If you’re a hopeless romantic yourself, you may be wondering what to get for that special someone in your life.  Look no further.  If you’re trying to think of something for the beautiful woman in your life, start by figuring out if you want to stay traditional or step out of the box.  If you want to stick to tradition, roses, chocolates, and jewelry are always the key to a girl’s heart.  If you want to change it up, clothes, gift cards, and a photo album of memories are a good starting point.  For the man in your life, it can always be difficult because their default answer for what they want is “nothing.”  Gifts that never fail for men include a new wallet, cologne, a watch, or clothes.

If you don’t have a special someone in your life, don’t be sad!  Singles Awareness Day is February 15.  Senior, Trysta Penning, says, “I’m my own Valentine.”
