Jasmyne Harrison takes a break from her Journalism II work for a quick picture.

Mrs. Spear’s first class of the day, Journalism II, is hard at work to create a beautiful yearbook for the 2020-2021 school year. Not only does this class build the yearbook from scratch, but we also work on the senior book as well.

The yearbook consist of specific pages that tie into activities, events, and students at Algona High School. From sports to academics to music and Prom, the yearbook has it all! The total cost for a yearbook is $55 and is due to Mrs. Spear by April 1st. Orders can be placed directly with Mrs. Spear or ordered online through Infinite Campus.

The senior book consists of a page for each 2021 senior and includes questions about them, such as their favorite class, how they survived Covid-19, and their highest streak. The total cost for a senior book is $20, also due by April 1st. These could not be ordered earlier, so if you haven’t paid Spear within the last week, you don’t have one ordered.

Each member of the Journalism II class works independently but all for the same cause, great publications. Each student was assigned eight senior pages to complete and 8-10 yearbook pages.

Every morning in journalism class, Mrs. Spear plays music to set the tone for the day. Ruby Mitchell, a Journalism music enthusiast, says, “The only bad thing about journalism is when we have to listen to country music.”

Each school week, Mrs. Spear’s journalism class divides and conquers the school newspaper, The Voice, which is what you are reading right now! As a group, we create topics that tie in with what’s going on around AHS or in the world. Each student is assigned a topic to write about, and each article is represented in the next week’s school newspaper.

Now that you have an insight on the exclusive and eccentric class of journalism, I hope you just might consider joining the fun next school year! If you’re looking for a calm, exciting, yet productive class to add to your schedule and contribute to AHS, this is the place for you!
