Softball - State 2020

The start of the 2021 AHS softball season is underway! Open gyms for pitching, catching, and hitting are finally in the works. With both softball and baseball up ahead, we’re getting closer and closer to summer.

For the past two softball seasons, the Algona High School team has qualified for the IGHSAU State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge, at Harlan Rogers Stadium. In 2019, the girls tied for 5th at State and were ranked number six in the state throughout the 2020 season.

Last year, the Algona Bulldogs graduated three seniors. Varsity coach, Todd VanOtterloo, reflects on the season, “Last year was certainly a different year with COVID protocols and a shortened season.  I was happy the girls got the opportunity to play. We were led by three great seniors in Ashlin Young, Kam Etherington, and Alyssa Hentges. I was happy for the girls that they got to end the season down at the State tournament.”

This year the three seniors include Emma Elsbecker, Emma Zabka, and Olivia Rochleau. Returning starters consist of Moriah Knapp, Lillian Etherington, Brooklyn Helmers, Lily Elsbecker, Emma Elsbecker, and two designated hitters, Olivia Rochleau and Kenzi Carrigan.

The coaching staff adds two new members to the softball squad this year. Travis Berke will be coaching the junior varsity softball team and Lindsey Carter will take over freshmen softball. VanOtterloo remains in charge to lead the team, and former junior varsity coach, Ryan King, will be volunteering.

Workouts have been productive so far this preseason, as many high schoolers and eighth graders are attending the open gyms. Good luck to the Bulldogs as they prepare for the start of the 2021 softball season!
