Geocaching 2021 - Carter Casey

Mr. Young’s advanced biology class has started winding down the year with some fun activities.  Their unit of GPS and orienteering started off kind of rough.  The students put coordinates into their GPS and headed towards the first location.  Everyone found the first location successfully, but when they divided into smaller groups, a lot of things went south (literally).

The groups were sent to find an “animal” hidden in the area of the coordinates they were given.  The first clue that they weren’t on the right track SHOULD have been the fact that they had to jump a fence.  But of course, adventure awaits, and that did not stop them.  The students were given instructions to call Mr. Young if they hadn’t found their animal yet.  Mr. Young received calls from all of the groups, and guess what?  They were all almost a mile from where they were supposed to be.  Once they got back on the right track, they found it with ease.  The students had lots of laughs and Mr. Young is still embarrassed.  Carley Mullins said, “Red flag #1 should have been when we were fence hopping and leaving school property.”

After the rough go with orienteering, the students went on a geocaching hunt.  Geocaching is a scavenger hunt where the map is online.  The students carpooled to different geocache locations and were successful at each one.  Now the students are in their ornithology, bird watching, unit.  Hopefully they won’t get lost this time!
