Stein 2021

One of the retirees this year at Algona High School is Phil Stein. Stein has been a teacher at AHS for 18 years and we have been thankful for him each year. He has been a great addition to the school district and will be missed next year.

After graduating high school, Stein attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. At Briar Cliff he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology, with a minor in physical education. He then traveled to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa and earned a Master’s of Science degree in science education. Fresh out of college, Stein began his teaching career at St. Edmond’s and only stayed there for one year. He then moved to Pocahontas Area Schools and spent fourteen years there educating many students. After Pochahontas, he taught for two years at Southeast Polk before arriving at Algona High School, and spending the past eighteen years here.

In Stein’s overall thirty-five years of teaching, he has mastered the subjects of biology, anatomy, biotechnology, environmental science, and chemistry. He enjoys working with high school students, coaching them, and watching them succeed in and out of school. Stein states, “Any time a student said that I had impacted them was a source of great pride and accomplishment; that's why I teach. I am always very gratified to hear from former students and hear about their amazing accomplishments and passions.”

Although Stein is saying goodbye to Algona High School, he will be continuing to teach chemistry at Jackson County Central High School in Jackson, Minnesota. He will continue to teach until he doesn’t have the passion anymore. Stein looks forward to reading more books, traveling with his wife, watching his grandchildren grow, and enjoying everyday life once he stops teaching.

AHS is very grateful for Mr. Stein and all that he has brought to the school district! Make sure you stop by his room and give him a wave before the year is over!
