Homecoming king/queen

Homecoming was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with old friends and AHS alumni. Last week, September 20-24, Algona High School held their Homecoming. Many AHS students had a great time and showed school spirit all week.

The theme for 2021 was Bulldogs Rule Around the World. The seniors’ hallway theme was Paris, juniors’ hallway was Africa, sophomores’ hallway was jungle/rainforest, and the freshmen’s hallway theme was beach/tropical. The students decorated their hallways on Sunday, September 19th, and they were viewed all throughout the week. Homecoming hallway winners were the seniors. Coming in second place were the juniors, third place was the freshmen, and in last place was the sophomores.

Monday, September 20, was the students’ first dress-up day, Music Day. The following students won awards for showing up in their fun, rockin’ outfits: freshmen, Josie Jennings and Ryan Haynes, had the takeaway with Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses shirts; sophomore, Sadie Johnson, looked Ozzy Osborn-like in her all black suit, accompanied by shades and jewelry; junior,  Lucy Bierstedt, was rockin’ it with tattooed arms and black garb; senior, Cali Mawdsley, was head bangin’ with her Def Leppard shirt and fishnet stockings.

Tuesday, September 21, was Tourist Day. The following students won awards for showing up in their most touristy and Hawaiian outfits: freshman, Emma Cecil, with her large binoculars for sightseeing; sophomore, Brenden Lucas, with his tourist hat and bright colored fanny pack; junior, Natalie Kleier, sporting her “I love New York” shirt to match her hallway and a fanny pack to match Mr. Kuecker; senior, Lucia Banchs, who even brought a map to navigate to her destination.

Wednesday, September 22, students stayed home and teachers were at the school doing staff development. Later that night, the boys played Muscle Volleyball in the gym, and the girls played Powderpuff football on the football field. The winning grade for Muscle Volleyball was the freshmen while the winning grade for Powderpuff football was the juniors.

Thursday, September 23, was Dynamic Duo Day. The following students won awards showing up in their unique duo outfits: freshmen, Aidyn Schmitt and Kadance Pearson, showing their 50 year anniversary shirts as Lucille and Marvin; sophomores, Ashley Cantu and Faith Zeller, living their underwater Spongebob dream; juniors, Carlos Gomez and Caitlyn Shannon, as the best friends Pooh and Piglet; seniors, Doris Pena and Brandon Harris, who will rescue you from perils as Batman and Robin.

Friday, September 24, was Spirit Day. Students showed up to school in red and black, showing their school spirit!

The students who were chosen for Homecoming Court include: Morganne Cassens, Jackson Cecil, Maddie Hilbert, Wyatt Garman, Taylor Kelly, Garrett Goche, Maddie Rahe, Tyler Manske, Amelia Tiili, and Trevon Smith. Congratulations to the Homecoming King and Queen, Wyatt Garman and Maddie Hilbert!

After school on Friday, the students were dismissed, by the marching band drumline, to the gym where the pep rally was held. The pep rally featured the crowning of the king and queen, class games, and highlights of fall activities. After the pep rally, a parade was held, which started at Bertha Godfrey and ended at the high school. The parade featured the elementary students, middle school banners, both the middle school and high school bands, the Homecoming Court, and students involved in fall activities. Later on that night, the Homecoming football game was held. The Bulldogs pulled off a big win and celebrated after with a Glow Night event in the AHS commons. Students brought their bright colors and friendly faces and enjoyed a free night of games, music, glow accessories, and fun with friends. Addison Behounek said, “I had so much fun at the game and hanging out with friends at Glow Night!”
