The Algona wrestling team had their first meet out of Christmas break on Thursday, January 6th, as they traveled to Clarion for a dual against the Cowboys. Algona lost in a very close contest, 35-33. Chase Roof, Jacob Zabka, Isaac Wilson, Tate Slagle, Ian Fehr, Luke Carter, and Brandon Harris all had victories for the Dogs. Jake Zabka says, “It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but the team wrestled hard and left it all on the mat.”
The Bulldogs had a quick turnaround, as they traveled to Clear Lake on Saturday, January 8th, for a tournament with Charles City, Emmetsburg, Forest City, North Butler, Okoboji, St. Ansgar, and West Fork. Issac Wilson won at 106 pounds, Jacob Zabka won at 113 pounds, and Tate Slagle won at 120 pounds. Brandon Harris and Hayden Thompson both finished second at 152 pounds and 132 pounds respectively. Luke Carter, Ian Fehr, Colby Jennings, and Chase Roof all placed third.
The Dogs had another quick turnaround as Estherville Lincoln Central and Okoboji came to town on Tuesday, January 11th. Issac Wilson, Jacob Zabka, Tate Slagle, Brandon Harris, Luke Carter, Hayden Thompson, Ashton Moreno, Cohen Refer, Ian Fehr, Hunter Penton, Colby Jennings, Sam Reitz, Dane Kitzinger, and Chase Roof all had victories for the Dogs on the night. Algona beat ELC 64-15 while handling Okoboji 67-12.
Tomorrow, the Bulldogs travel to South Hardin for a tournament. They’re at home again on Tuesday, the 18th, for a triangular.
