State wrestling 2022

The wrestling season for the Bulldogs has officially ended. The Dogs had an incredible season this year, with a record of 22-4 for their duals. For the guys themselves, individually they worked hard to reach their personal goals. Most of them have achieved it but some are willing to put in twice as much work for next year.

Algona had two people make it to State at the Wells Fargo Arena. Isaac Wilson, at 106 pounds, and Tate Slagle, at 120 pounds. They are the first freshmen wrestlers from Algona to qualify for State since 1989. History is being made for sure here at Algona High School. Five coaches traveled along with the wrestlers: Coach Yi, Adams, Kraft, and both Kueckers.

When ready to head to State, Wilson stated,”It feels great. It has been something that I have been looking forward to since I was a little kid. I’m excited to compete at the State meet.” Slagle stated, “Going to State as a freshman was a big goal for me. The feeling of wrestling down at the Well is like no other.”

The Algona fans are truly loyal and were willing to go watch and support the boys for the three days. As for Slagle and Wilson, they worked hard to get as far into their brackets as they could. Unfortunately, both fell short of getting on the podium as they both went 1-2.

Afterwards, both of the guys were able to go home well and healthy, proud that they made it as far as they did. The guys gave their final thoughts about their experiences. Wilson states, “I had a great time down at State. It was a great experience, and I will be looking forward to getting on the podium next year.” As for Slagle, he stated, “It did not go the way I wanted, but I hope to be on the podium next year.”
