Volleyball team 2022

On Saturday, October 15th, Spencer, Gladbrook Reinbeck, Forest City, Lake Mills, and St. Edmonds competed at Algona for their last home tournament of the 2022 season.

The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a 2-3 record.  The girls defeated Spencer and St. Edmond in two sets each. Their games against Lake Mills, Gladbrook Reinbeck, and Forest City were all close, with the majority of them going to three sets.

The Algona volleyball team ended their season on Monday, October 17th. The girls traveled to Estherville Lincoln Central to play their opening round post-season game. The Bulldogs lost 0-3, but they played tight throughout each match. The first set ended 20-25, the second set ended 21-25, and the third set ended 16-25.

They concluded the season with an overall record of 14-19 and a Conference record of 4-3.

This season, the Bulldogs played great and received strong community support. They also played as a group, and senior, Lillian Etherington, says, “It is not the outcome we wanted, but I’m glad I got to spend time with my teammates.”

Lillian Etherington, Lily Elsbecker, A’Lailah Perry, Cailey Carroll, and Maddy Kahler were the seniors who played their last high school volleyball season this year. While these seniors go on to do great things in the future, the underclassmen are already looking forward to next season.

This year was also Coach Birkey’s first year as head coach and her second year coaching volleyball at AHS. Before coaching in Algona, she coached at Emmetsburg.

Three of the team’s players were named to the North Central All Conference teams. A’Lailah Perry was a unanimous decision  for the first team. Lillian Etherington was named to the second team, and Najolie Price was named on the third team.
