Thanksgiving break 2022

The American national holiday known as Thanksgiving Day will take place on November 24 in 2022. Get your food and goodies to prepare for the upcoming holiday this month.

President George Washington declared “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” on Thursday, November 26, 1789. President Abraham Lincoln urged Americans to observe November 24 as “a day of Thanksgiving” starting in 1863. A few years later, in 1870, Congress adopted legislation to establish Thanksgiving as a federal holiday. Thanksgiving’s date was left up to the President’s discretion, unlike the other holidays included in the bill.

Most Presidents, up until Franklin D. Roosevelt, followed Lincoln’s example and proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of gratitude. To help businesses still struggling from the after effects of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt shifted Thanksgiving to the third Thursday of November.

The National Turkey Federation reports that around 90% of Americans consume turkey on Thanksgiving, whether it be roasted, baked, or deep-fried. Stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie are further typical dishes of this holiday. Volunteering is a tradition amongst many on Thanksgiving. Many areas frequently arrange food drives and provide free meals for the less fortunate.

There are also football games and 5k races that take place on Thanksgiving Day. Eliza Schultz states, “Thanksgiving for me is really fun because I get to see my family. I do the Turkey Trot every year, which is not fun when I’m cutting weight for wrestling.” The Turkey Trot is an annual 5k race for the Algona community that takes place on Thanksgiving morning.

In cities and towns all around the United States, parades have also developed into a crucial component of the celebration. The Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City, which has been hosted by Macy’s department store since 1924, is the biggest and most well-known, gathering between 2 and 3 million spectators over its 2.5-mile route and a sizable television viewership. Marching bands, performers, ornate floats carrying various celebrities, and enormous balloons in the style of cartoon characters are frequently included.

We hope everyone at AHS has a wonderful break and enjoys their holiday festivities, whatever they might be.
