VanOtterloo 2022

Todd VanOtterloo was raised in Algona, Iowa. Ann Doornick and Kevin VanOtterloo are his parents. VanOtterloo has a younger brother and sister as well.

VanOtterloo received his education at Algona Schools. He was a four-sport athlete in high school, competing on the football, basketball, track, and baseball teams. In 1999, he received his diploma and planned on furthering his education. 

VanOtterloo attended Wartburg College in Waverly before transferring to UNI. When he transferred to UNI, VanOtterloo earned his B.A. in criminology. Through Grand Canyon University, he then earned a master’s degree in special education.

When VanOtterloo first returned to Algona, he obtained work at Rabiner Treatment Center for a few years. Later on, he was hired to investigate child abuse for the Department of Human Services. Before starting at AHS, he spent four years working for DHS. VanOtterloo has now been working with the school’s special education students for a couple of years. VanOtterloo enjoys helping students and impacting their lives, which is why he decided to work in special education. VanOtterloo says, “I’m a big believer in: you can control what you can control.” 

VanOtterloo is a coach at AHS as well. He was a  basketball coach for middle school boys and girls, and he coaches his daughter’s travel basketball team. In addition, he spent thirteen years as a football assistant coach. VanOtterloo will be in charge of the girls’ softball team for the fourth straight season as head coach this summer and will be in his third year as an assistant coach for the girls’ basketball team this winter.

VanOtterloo is married to Alison. Casey, Taylor, Payton, and Drew are their four children. Their children all attend Algona Community Schools. VanOtterloo enjoys watching sports, spending time with his family, and coaching his children’s sports in his spare time.
