On Saturday, January 21st, all students from Algona participating in Large Group Speech will travel to Spencer to compete in Districts. Participants find a Large Group Speech category that interests them and then they work in groups to rehearse a piece. Then they perform it in a contest in front of judges and an audience. There are eight different categories that students can compete in. The first speech competition on Saturday will start at 8:00 and the last will finish around 2:15. Many different schools from around Iowa will be participating in this event.

All Large Group Speech participants who receive a Division I rating at Districts qualify to compete in the State contest in LeMars on Saturday, February 4th. At the State contest, participants can qualify for All State. They do this by receiving a Division I rating and being nominated by the judges. The All-State contest will be held at Iowa State University.

Waverly Espe says, “Speech is fun!” Large Group Speech is a great activity to be involved in if you enjoy working with groups and presenting in front of judges.
