Moriah Knapp - 1st 3000 meter Clear Lake indoor

The 2023 track season has finally begun. Even though the weather hasn’t been very cooperative lately, several meets have still happened due to having indoor tracks.

Some of the girls’ track members ran at UNI on March 6 and competed with some of the best in the state. Ten of the girls from the team got a very good experience. Moriah Knapp ran the 3000-meter run and placed 6th overall. For her heat, she placed 1st and lapped many people. Her sister, Macy Knapp, a freshman, ran the open 800. Macy’s time was 2:42, and she competed very well in her first Varsity meet.

On Friday, March 10, eight of the boys’ track team members ran at Iowa State. A freshman, Gavin Weber, ran the open 1600 race. In the race, he ran a time of 4 minutes and 39 seconds. The boys also had a distance medley team go down and run, consisting of Porter Reffer, Lamorn Ulfers, Ashton Moreno, and Gavin Weber. The boys placed 10th overall. Reffer states, “Once on the track, no going back.”

The girls ran at the Humboldt Recreation Center on Thursday, March 16. They did very well; it was some of the girls’ first meet. Natalie Johnson ran an open 200 and placed second overall. Ava Henry, Reese Taylor, Aylee Herke, and Ella Lawson all ran the 4x200 and did an excellent job, placing second overall. Ashley Cantu threw the shot put for a total of 31-03 feet. All the girls did a fantastic job at this meet!

Additionally, the boys ran at the Humboldt Recreation Center on Friday, March 17. They all did a great job since some of the basketball players had a limited number of practices due to State basketball. The 4x400 team consisted of Ashton Moreno, Gavin Weber, Caden Weber, and Evan Allie. These boys dominated and got first place. Caleb Omdahl placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5-08. In the open 200, Jayden Erpelding and William Weychert placed first and second. The boys did a great job; everyone is excited to watch these boys this year.

The girls and boys run next at the Clear Lake Athletics and Wellness Center. The girls run on Thursday, March 23, while the boys run on Friday, March 24.
