Wednesday, March 22, was the annual Superstars event at AHS, where students from each grade compete against one another to win first place bragging rights.
Every year students of each grade are assigned a certain color to wear as they compete against the other grades. As always, freshmen wore white, sophomores wore blue, juniors wore red, and seniors wore black. This year’s theme for Superstars was Bulldog Nation.
Superstars started at 11:45 with the opening ceremony. The first event was dodgeball, which took place at noon. The seniors went against the freshmen while the juniors went against the sophomores. The losers would then play against each other while the winners went against each other. This was the pairing structure for the entirety of Superstars. The senior girls and sophomore boys won overall in dodgeball.
After dodgeball, Rubik’s Cube, paper airplane, checkers/chess, Topple, Yatzee, cup stacking, ping pong, fencing, arm wrestling, ledgeball, cornhole, team hideout, steal the bacon, video games, and putting all took place throughout the high school. Juniors scored the most points overall in Rubik’s Cube, paper airplane, checkers/chess, Topple, Yahtzee, cup stacking, ping pong, and fencing. The seniors scored the most overall in arm wrestling, putting, cornhole, video games, ledgeball, team hideout, steal the bacon, spike ball, and crab soccer.
At 1:15, human ladder, UNO, Euchre, weight lifting, pickleball, chipping, crab soccer, grand prize game, and spikeball all took place. Seniors scored the most points overall in those games.
After those activities, the talent show took place. Some talents included dog tricks, dancing, and singing. The juniors scored the most points in the talent show.
Events at 2:30 were limbo, tire bridge, 3 point contest, and musical chairs. Seniors scored the most points in those events as well. One highlight was Teagan Smith winning musical chairs while Jacob Zabka knocked out the competition in limbo.
The final event was tug of war. Women went first, then men, and fin
ally co-ed. The seniors won the women’s tug of war, the juniors won the men’s tug of war, and the seniors won the co-ed.
To wrap up Superstars 2023, all the grades sat as the total points and placings were read. The class presidents stood in their corresponding place on the podium. In fourth was the freshmen, with 260.5 points. The juniors were in third, with 343.8 points. In second was the sophomores, with 359.4 points. And the Superstars 2023 champions were the seniors, with 393.2 points.
