Large group speech 2024

On January 20th, AHS speech students attended a large group speech contest in Orange City, at Northwestern College. Speech is an extracurricular activity where students compete at a regional site chosen the year of the competition.

There are multiple different categories students can participate in, and they each get a chance to wow the judges in order to proceed to State after Districts. There are speech categories for everyone; some of the popular ones include: group improv, musical theater, one act, reader's theater, and radio broadcasting.

This year, Algona had two musical theater groups, two for solo mime, two for ensemble acting, three for improv, one one-act group, one readers theater group, two short film groups, and lastly, one radio news team.

Senior, Sydney Seebecker, says, “This year has been so exciting and filled with new adventures! It’s been so fun!”  Large Group Speech is run by the new speech and theater director, Ms. Zwiefel.

Students found out their scores the day of the contest, so then they have plenty of time to perfect their acts before State. The director also receives critiques from the judges the week after the competition date. This allows each school to know exactly what to work on to improve their pieces for State. State will be held on February 3rd at Spencer.
