AHS Student Senate has been on a roll with planning and hosting many events at Algona High School. They started the year by helping make Homecoming at Algona special, including the pep rally games, hallway decorating, and all of the creative dress up days. They did all of the behind the scenes actions during Homecoming, like finding all of the vehicles for everyone in the parade to ride in, planning the pep rally games, and planning the powderpuff and muscle volleyball games. Summer Thompson said, “I loved getting to help decide the dress up days.”MOC Floyd Valley donation 2025

Student Senate has also acknowledged tragedies that have happened in the surrounding communities. Following the MOC Floyd Valley fire tragedy, they put together gift baskets and gave money to the families who lost a loved one. Student Senate also put up flyers around the school for students and faculty to donate items for the Remsen St Mary basketball girls’ tragedy after they were injured in a car accident.

A big event that takes place at Algona High School is the fall ball. Student Senate planned, decorated, and created the playlist for the dance. They spent hours setting up and taking down the decorations for the day and did tons of behind the scenes work. This event is very well attended by Algona students and was held on November 7th.

Whoopcoming champion 2026Student Senate also held their annual Whoopcoming event, which is a type of homecoming for both wrestling and basketball. They planned dress up days for students the week of January 9th. They also planned the three point contest that took place after the basketball game on the 23rd where Levi Walker walked away as the winner.

Some upcoming events Student Senate is working on include the mental health concert on March 6th and the pickle ball tournament on March 12th. Natalee Reemtsma and her sister, Abbi Reemtsma, are planning the mental health concert by setting up the acts and overall planning the entire concert. Abby Lampe created the pickle ball tournament two years ago and it has been a large success ever since. It will be taking place again this year, tentatively scheduled for the 12th of March. Students can dress up in fun costumes/outfits for a chance to win a prize at the tournament.

Student Senate meets around once a month to discuss all of the events they host, so if you have any ideas of events that will interest the school, see one of the many Student Senate members.
