This year Algona High School got the wonderful opportunity of having Mrs. Fischels as a new addition to the great school staff. She took over Mrs. Stein’s job as one of the high school counselors after she retired. Many students have found comfort in Fischels’ presence at AHS.
Mrs. Fischels first attended the University of Iowa for her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. She expressed that when she was an undergrad during her internship she was helping a child with math and he was opening up to her about his difficulties at home. That experience guided her to the realization that helping children in need is a very vital career that she would enjoy. Then she went to the University of Nebraska in Omaha for her Master of Science in K-12 School Counseling.
Before coming to AHS, she was a counselor at three high schools and Cedar Rapids elementary school, as well as her experience as an academic advisor at Iowa State University.
She now has a beautiful family with her husband, Matt. They have a baby boy and another baby on the way. Luckily for our community, Fischels found a comfortable place for her and her family here. She stated, “It is nice making an impact closer to my hometown.”
Her days vary every day, but she said she really enjoys her time here. Her work days are spent helping students academically and personally. She is very kind, caring, and vibrant.
Algona High School wants to thank Mrs. Fischels for her kindness and compassion as the new counselor. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by and say hi, be sure to do so!
