Going from unrecognized to undefeated, the Algona girls´ wrestling team has had a great season so far! The team has accomplished many achievements this season, one being having five ranked girls: Ruby Roof at 125 is ranked #1, Reagan Haynes at 190 is ranked #2, Regan Jensen at 155 is ranked #3, Mara Davis at 100 is ranked #3, and Laura Stohr at 115 is ranked #9.
Freshman Emilee Hargrove says, “You can do as much as you put your mind to.”
This year the wrestlers pushed their way through, making it the second year in a row being undefeated in duals, resulting in a dual championship trophy. They have faced off against Lake Mills three times so far this year, defeating them every time. The first dual the team beat them 72-6 in Lake Mills, at home the girls beat them 56-24, and to end off the season in Northwood-Kinsett, the wrestlers beat them 60-18. Other notable dual wins this season includes beating Clear Lake with a score of 68-10 and beating Humboldt with a score of 64-18.
The girls also did very well during the tournaments this season, placing 6th at Donny Brook and 4th or above at every other tournament. On Saturday, January 17th, the team had their NCC Conference meet at home, ending with all of the girls placing 3rd or higher, resulting in the girls having a 100 point lead, winning the championship for the second year in a row. The team had six first place finishers at the NCC Conference tournament: Mara Davis at 100 pounds, Reese Taylor at 110 pounds, Ruby Roof at 125 pounds, Alissa Engel at 130 pounds, Emmy Owen at 145 pounds, and Regan Jensen at 155 pounds.
Personal highlights this year include Mara Davis getting her hundredth win at the NCC tournament, while at Fort Dodge for the Early Bird tournament, Reagan Haynes also got her hundredth win.
The Bulldogs are now continuing to practice and get ready for their last few competitions of the season. This Saturday, January 24th, the girls have their Northern Iowa tournament in Mason City.
Then, to end off the season, they compete in Nevada on the thirtieth for Regionals. From Regionals the girls need to place 2nd or higher to advance to State.
