The Algona High School’s Model United Nations team has found great success in their season so far. The team has attended two debates previously, with a much anticipated wait for their future leaders' summit debate, which was held February 24th through the 26th.
For the future leaders' summit debate, Algona’s delegates traveled to Muscatine, Iowa, to represent AHS in their meetings with over 100 Chinese students. This event allowed for rich cultural experience among the students by letting them experience and meet students from completely different backgrounds. In addition to the meetings and debates, the delegates were given the opportunities to go bowling, go out to eat, and create new friendships.
Mr. Stein remarked, “This conference is always my favorite. Where else would students from Iowa get the chance to work with students from across the globe?” The delegates discussed and debated international issues from all around the globe regarding human conflict.
Over the span of three days, the Model UN delegates corresponded with the international Chinese students through meetings and fun events. AHS delegates took the role of representing The Democratic Republic of Congo and Venezuela in their discussions. This was very important as these countries are experiencing major turmoil and conflict, creating a more serious atmosphere for the debates.
The students had a great time debating and learning more about Chinese culture.
