On April tenth, Algona High School students went through a “Stop the Bleed” safety course. With this they learned how to apply a tourniquet, how to pack a wound, and how to apply pressure in an emergency situation.
The students first met with the Kossuth Emergency Management team as well as local law enforcement officers at around eight-thirty Thursday, April ninth. They started with a brief classroom session. Then they moved to the gym where the students learned hands on how to apply tourniquets. At the same time, students in the gym balcony learned how to effectively pack a wound. Students learned how everyday bystanders can be very helpful in saving lives before professional emergency personnel arrive. Students switched stations to learn the information from each.
The AHS staff has already participated in this training in the past, but the goal is for all students to be exposed to these life saving skills so they know what to do in the event of an emergency. When asked about the course, junior Alex Brooks said, “ It was very informational.”
While Stop the Bleed hopefully won't have to be used in school, it is a very good life skill and could help you in the future.
