Carley Mullins

This week’s Senior Spotlight goes to the incredibly deserving Carley Mullins! Carley lives in Algona with her wonderful parents, Brenda and Greg Mullins, as well as her younger brother, Brad. She also helps care for her two pets: Cy, the yellow lab, and Shadow, the rabbit.

Carley’s free spirit can often be reflected in her hobbies. She’ll usually find herself reading, baking, running, or just enjoying the outdoors in general. After school, she participates in cross country, jazz band, and quiz bowl. When asked to list some favorites of hers, Carley instantly thought of food related items, including coffee, chai tea, and overnight oats. You’ll also probably find her eating her favorite foods with her left hand even though she’s right handed, for she prefers to eat that way.

As an active and adored senior member of AHS, Carley likes how real the future seems now that she’s getting closer to graduating. Carley’s preparing herself for what’s to come and she can’t wait for what’s in store. Carley has very strong opinions about who she is and who is guiding her. When asked to describe herself, Carley says, “In my world, God’s in control and has a plan for your entire life. All you have to do is walk it out.” She advises future students in high school not to fall for the temptations of procrastinating, for it causes immense stress in the future and is not worth whatever you decide to do while procrastinating. Carley also motivates herself and others to remember that life is as simple as you make it and to pick up your feet and start exploring.

On the subject of COVID, Carley recognizes that the situation is not ideal, but she does not take the pandemic pessimistically. She saw the pandemic as a way to spend time with family, catch up on some hobbies, and  soak in nature. She also recognizes that her viewpoint stems from her privilege and that she is thankful to be in such a position that the pandemic didn’t affect her too terribly.

Carley’s future plans consist of getting a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from South Dakota State University. She wishes now and in the future to inspire people by, in her words, “...being a light. A light to welcome; a humble lanturn helping others on their paths; a light for the Lord.”

AHS has been so fortunate to be given the opportunity to nurture such a bright and beautiful individual. She has gifted her talents to the school and impacted the lives of many with her positive attitude. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with Carley; you never know what will come out of her mouth, but you won’t regret stopping to chat!
