Eliza Schultz - track 2021

The 2021 track season is a go! The girls and boys have been training hard since the start of March and finally have started to compete. 

The boys competed in their first competition at the Humboldt Indoor meet on Friday, March 12th. Algona placed seventh out of ten teams with 28 team points. Humboldt won the meet with 138 team points. Algona had a few top three performances including Ryan Stundahl placing second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:17.01. The stand out sophomore says, “Right now the season has gone well and I hope it continues upon that path.” Also, the 4x200 meter relay of Porter Reffer, Carlos Gomez-Banchs, Brad Mullins, and Tyler Manske placed third with a time of 1:43.43.

The boys competed in Jefferson on Thursday, March 29th. Ryan Stundahl placed third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:14.24. Nick Brown placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.98. 

The girls traveled to Clear Lake on Tuesday, April 6th, for their first meet of the season. Algona placed fourth out of eight teams with 103 team points. Humboldt won the meet with 151 team points. Algona had a few outstanding performances. Dionna VanGorkom says, “Our first meets have gone well, and I’m looking forward to improving as the season goes on.” The senior jumped 4’10” for a third place finish in the high jump. Algona’s 4x100 meter relay of Kayla Thompson, Alexa Chase, Ava Henry, and Radaisyia Thomas placed second in a time of 54.07. Moriah Knapp took second place in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:11.46. Knapp also placed second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:17.34. Brooklyn Helmers placed 3rd in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:43.56. Alexa Chase placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.50. Radaisyia Thomas placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.65.

The boys’ track team ran their third meet of the season on Tuesday, April 6th. The Bulldogs traveled to Eagle Grove for some track action. Algona placed sixth out of eight teams with 50 team points. Humboldt won the meet with 158 team points. Algona had several standout performances at the meet. The 4x200 meter relay of Carlos Gomez-Banchs, Cameren Rindone, Nick Brown, and Tyler Manske ran a 1:36.35 for first place. Ryan Stundahl placed second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:00. Stundahl also placed second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:03. Algona’s 4x400 meter relay of Nick Brown, Caden Weber, Stren Crouch, and Levi Clegg placed third in a time of 3:46.82.

The girls’ track squad competed in Eagle Grove on Thursday, April 8th. Algona placed second out of seven teams. Bishop Garrigan was the meet winner. Algona had a bunch of great performances. Moriah Knapp took first place in three individual events. She ran the 3000 meter run in 11:25.20, the 800 meter run in 2:43.29, and the 1500 meter run in 5:33.16. Dionna VanGorkom took first place in high jump with a jump of 4’8”. The 1600 meter medley relay of Peyton Bradley, Alexa Chase, Dionna VanGorkom, and Moriah Knapp took first place in a time of 4:49.95. Radaisyia Thomas placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.33.

The boys’ track team competed in Humboldt on Friday, April 9th. Algona placed sixth out of eight teams with 63 team points. Humboldt won the meet with 188 team points. The Bulldogs had some stand out performances, like Ryan Stundahl placing third in the 3200 meter race with a time of 10:48.34. The 4x200 meter relay of Carlos Gomez-Banchs, Cameren Rindone, Nick Brown, and Tyler Manske placed third with a time of 1:36.98.

The Algona boys’ team track meet in Clear Lake, scheduled for Tuesday, April 13th, was cancelled due to weather conditions. The Algona girls’ track team had their home meet, also scheduled for Tuesday, April 13th, postponed due to the weather. 

Next, the boys’ team traveled to Waukee for a meet on Thursday, April 15th while the girls’ team traveled to North Iowa on the same day. 

Coming up for the Bulldogs, tonight the boys’ team will travel to Estherville for a meet and the girls’ team will travel across town to compete at Bishop Garrigan tonight.
