Superstars 2021

Superstars at AHS is a big part of everyone’s high school experience. With a year “off,” this year’s was better than ever! The seniors were excited, looking to finally place higher than 3rd. This year was also different, as two grades, the freshmen and sophomores, have never participated in Superstars. This year’s Superstars event was held during the day, starting at 11:45 and ended around 4:00 pm.

Superstars is a yearly tradition that AHS has been done for many years. Bill Fjetland came up with the idea and started it in 1988. Fjetland is a retired P.E teacher and principal from AHS.

This year was the 32nd Superstars at AHS, and it was a hoot. The seniors swept the competition with almost a 100 point difference from the second place juniors. The seniors had 385 points, followed by the juniors with 286.5, then with the upset, the freshmen ended in 3rd with 276.5 points and the sophomores, in blue, finished in 4th place with 249 points.

The first open event was dodgeball, where the seniors boys won and the sophomore girls won. Also at this time was quiz bowl, where the seniors won.

While many events of Superstars students had to sign up for in advance, there were also several “drop in” games that anyone could compete in, including: chess/checkers, topple, cup stacking, grand prize game, ping pong, and fencing. These drop in events can earn big points for their grades.  The freshmen earned a total of 49 points here while the sophomores earned 47, 36 for the juniors, and seniors gained 43 points.

The next set of games were arm wrestling, putting, bean bag toss, ledgeball, hide out, steal the bacon, triple threat, and rubiks challenge. After this set of games, the freshmen scored 49 points, the sophomores added 47, the juniors had the low of 36, and seniors added in 43 points.

Right before the talent show, there was another set of games, including: human ladder, euchre, pickleball, chipping, crab soccer, weight lifting, and spikeball. The seniors had the most points in this set with 65, followed by the juniors with 54, then the freshmen with 30, and sophomores with 16.

The talent show was very energized! Sydney Seebecker had a stunning singing and piano performance, Shriji Patel broke some boards, Brayden Bond was shredding on the guitar, Kylie Skow had a heated country hit, and Ava Roach and Emma Elsbecker performed a beautiful duet. The talent show was full of . . . talent!  The seniors scored the best in the talent show, with 27 points, followed by the freshmen with 16.5, then juniors with a 6.5. The sophomores didn’t have any talents entered in the show.

After the amazing talent show, more events that highlight competition were held: limbo, the 3 point contest, tire bridge, and musical chairs. The seniors dominated this set with a score of 47. The rest of the grades totaled 26.

The next and final events were tug of war and lightning. The seniors swept in tug of war with the girls’, boys’, and co-ed teams all winning. The sophomores struck big, winning in lightning.

Some of the best highlights of the day were seeing each grade dress up creatively in their assigned colors. Freshmen were in white, sophomores wore blue, juniors showed off red, and seniors were in all black.

All the students and staff involved had a good time and will never forget about Superstars 2021. One of the seniors who has been involved with Superstars since freshman year is Hunter Berry. Berry said, “It is always a fun time competing against other grades. You will never see a better crab soccer team than the seniors this year.” Another senior, Elly Louwagie, states, “I’m just glad the seniors finally won something!”

This year’s Superstars will be one for the books. Good job to everyone who participated, it’s already time to start training for next year!
