The Algona girls’ and boys’ wrestling teams have been working hard this season. As of recently, the boys traveled to their NCC Tournament on January 21st. Placing first was Tate Slagle and Barrett Morgan. Coming in second place was Jacob Zabka, and in third place was Elijah Wilhite and Isaac Wilson. Colby Jennings placed 4th, as Taevyn Zinnel, Ashton Moreno, Ian Fehr, Foster Myhre, and Hunter Kollasch placed 5th. In 6th place was Gavin Goche and Chase Roof.
On January 24th, the Algona boys wrestled West Hancock and Hampton. Some highlights from the night include pins over West Hancock by Chase Roof in 1:05, Landon Thompson in 1:13, and Taevyn Zinnel in 1:24. Colby Jennings won his match against West Hancock with a 10-2 major decision. Ashton Moreno also had a major decision over West Hancock, 13-5. Barrett Morgan beat his West Hancock opponent with a 5-1 decision. Against Hampton, Isaac Wilson got a pin with a time of only 43 seconds. Pins also came from Hunter Kollasch in 1:20, Foster Myhre in 1:51, Ian Fehr in 2:15, Colby Jennings in 3:06, and Tate Slagle in 3:17. Taevyn Zinnel had a 9-6 decision and Barrett Morgan won by a 13-7 decision.
The boys competed in Class 2A Regional Duals on January 31st. They wrestled tough against a good Clarion team but came up just two points shy of advancing as a team. Wins on the night came from Barrett Morgan, Taevyn Zinnel, Tate Slagle, Gavin Goche, Cohen Reffer, Elijah Wilhite, Jacob Zabka, and Isaac Wilson.
Next up for the boy is the IHSAA 2A District 4 competition on February 11th. In order to advance to the State tournament, the boys must place well here individually.
The girls have had an amazing season this year! They recently traveled to Decorah, on the 27th, for Super Regionals. The girls had to place in the top four from here to move on to the State tournament. The girls who wrestled at Super Regionals were Harley Tobin, Reece Taylor, MaKayla Erpelding, Malyn Davis, Jenna Stohr, Abbe Gorham, and Gretchen Gorham. The competition here was intense, as all girls were working hard to punch their ticket to State. Congratulations to Harley Tobin and Abbe Gorham as they qualified for State! The Girls’ State Wrestling Tournament will be on February 2nd in Coralville. Good luck girls!
