Helmers basketball 2024

The Algona boys’ basketball team ended their season this past week. They ended with a record of 14 wins and 8 losses. The boys put up several great matches against Clarion-Goldfield, Hampton-Dumont, Webster City, and North Polk. When asked how the boys did this season, Reid Louwagie responded, “We worked hard every day and played well as a team.”

On February 6, 2024, the AHS boys’ basketball team faced off against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at Algona. It was an intense match with the Bulldogs down 12-5 in the first quarter, but they came back in the second quarter, leading 22-21. During halftime, the Algona Dance Team put on an amazing performance. They were followed by the Dawg Pound Sound blasting familiar favorites for everybody. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs lost the lead again, falling behind 36-39. To wrap up the 4th quarter, the Bulldogs pulled it together and got an amazing win, 55-48.

On Friday, February 9, the Bulldogs went up against the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs, winning the game 62-61. Leading scorers on the night include Ben Helmers with 19 points, Alex Manske with 15 points, and Evan Allie with 14 points.

On February 12, the Bulldogs had another away game, this time against the Spencer Tigers. The Bulldogs fought hard to win but didn’t have enough time to come back.

The Bulldogs then went on to play against the Webster City Lynx on February 13, winning the game 56-41. Helmers led in points with 19, Manske contributed 15, and Allie had 10.

Algona went on to the first round of postseason play against the North Polk Comets. It was a tight game the whole way through; unfortunately, Algona lost 60-50, ending their season shorter than they would have hoped. The leading players in that match were Ben Helmers with 19 points, Alex Manske with 12 points, and Landon Welp with 12 points.

The seniors leaving the team this year include Landon Welp, Daniel Kemna, Hoyt Crouch, Reid Louwagie, and Logan Lentz. The team is really going to miss them next year and the years to come.
